Vicious didn't burst in there and slit Mao's throat because he was mad about whatever. He picked his battles, which is illustrated perfectly by the whole Mao assassination. Vicious in the anime was a calculated guy. Maybe Spike will be fine if he just ignores Vicious' existence." This was not something that needed an explanation.Īnd even if we did want to take a trip down Vicious' side of the story, the story that was presented in the Netflix adaptation was not what I was interested in seeing. Where Spike was concerned, the 'why' of Vicious didn't matter anymore, only the 'where'.Īt no point during watching the anime did I go, "Oh, you know what? I'm not sold on Vicious being vicious. He stabbed Mao in the back, he stabbed Gren in the back, he let Lin die for him, etc., all to get to the top of the Syndicate.Ĭowboy Bebop wasn't about Vicious, it was about Spike, so details about how bad Vicious was were completely unnecessary. was him dueling Spike not enough to show how badass he was?Īnime Vicious didn't need three hours dedicated to his villainous monologues because there was enough in the anime to paint the broad strokes already. When the creator(s) of a story understands human psychology they can create characters that feel realistic and behave according within the story. It's the characterization in CB that makes it so special for me. I've never seen anything like that in any other fictional work. A dude gives his life for him and he reacts with disgust. How does Vicious react? He picks up the drugs they just scored off the ground, looks at his corpse with the kind of respect you'd give to a dog eating its own shit, states "there is nothing in this world to believe in", and walks away. All that matters to him is the Red Dragon. He realizes Vicious views him with nothing other than contempt but he doesn't care. Lin gives his own life to save Vicious for no reason other than his own loyalty to the Red Dragon Crime Syndicate and his belief that Vicious is the right man to lead it. Random anecdote from a redditor from this thread: His reaction to Lin's death in Jupiter Jazz Pt 1 reveals a lot too. *Psychopaths lack a sense of guilt or remorse for any harm they may have caused others, instead rationalizing the behavior, blaming someone else, or denying it outright His demeanor and the english VA's performance help the characterization. To me, he's shown to be a calculating *psychopath who's only concerned in his own self-aggrandizement. It's something you'd hear about on Mindhunter. In contrast with the lighter tone of the preceding 4 episodes, it's one of the darker moments in Cowboy Bebop. He smiles after Mao's hit, then causally sits with his corpse at the opera. It isn't shown through "action scenes" but through the ruthlessness he displays. They didn't show Vicious as being some badass in the anime either. That isn’t to say the anime didn’t have problems, it did but it still had a better way of telling each characters story than the LA. I mean Spike is on his headphones dissociating most of the time he’s not fighting. And the whole partner dynamic between Spike and Jet was over stressed and it felt like they over represented their partnership when in the show, they damn near didn’t associate each other unless it was on the job. Spike’s motivation was fairly spotty until the middle of the anime, but in the show they tell you right away, which takes away from Spikes eventual conclusion that he will never get over the past and that until he kills vicious and settles the score he’ll never step into the future. Faye’s character doesn’t start with that mystique she had in the anime, and that mystique was tied to her memory loss and her main story theme- searching for a place to call home. They serialized an episodic story that wove each characters narrative together. That is the main reason why cowboy beebop LA is hard to get through.
